Geert Wilders: Like Hitler, but Blonde
12th Feb 2009 17:59:29
Fitna, the Movie. Seems to have sparked off the age old "Free Speech" problem again. That being, where do we draw the line.
First, I recommend watching the film. Well, I don't exactly recommend it, but in order to decide whether one would allow Geert Wilders to come into our country to show his film should watch it. So do. I'm typing this at the same time as watching it for the second time.
The film consists of a brown background and a pictures of terrorist attacks and some radical Muslim leaders saying things ranging from weird to horrific. Every now and then, there's a Koran verse saying something violent.
And that's it. After about 10mins, the film talks about "The Netherlands under the spell of Islam". Just seems to consist of a lady in a Burkha walking her child through a park, then a graph of the number of Muslims in the Netherlands. 54 in 1909, and 944,000 in 2004. There are 57million in Europe, it seems.
After the statistics, which are a nice break from the pitiful propaganda, we go back to the old "videos of radicals saying horrible things" bit, at about 11:30, with some rather dramatic music. A few newspaper headlines, and you're done.
The film is 17 minutes of pure anti-Muslim propaganda. Anyone with a working knowledge of Windows Movie Maker could knock up a similar video about Christians in an hour or two. Grab some footage of those weird American super-Christians, splice it together with a copy of Carmina Burana over the top, and grab three or four Bible verses proclaiming death to various things.
Anyway, my point. Wilders wants to:

So, the good old "Back where you came from" argument. Here's another gem, from the same article.
- Geert Wilders
Direct quote this time. Why on earth is anyone fighting for the rights of a man who has spent his life fighting for fascism? we let Hitler (yes, yes, there were going to be a fair few Hitler comparisons, weren't there?) have a free reign by giving in to him and letting him peddle his racism for years, and then we had to have a war to sort out who was right.
I know, it's awful, but the comparison is justified. "Speech" isn't some mythical thing that has to be protected under all causes. Evil men can use it to spread hate and division. We thankfully don't have a lot of that in the Western world, but the last time someone spread hate about the minorities, it ended up poisoning the minds of a desperate, mistreated people, who ended up committing atrocities. We cannot allow Wilders into our country to spread his hate and poison, and we cannot allow the spreading of hatred and division, especially in our modern world.
- Edmund Burke (attrib.)
